The Walter F. Lewis Community Garden

In 2008, the Town of Chelmsford purchased the land on Robin Hill Rd. which was occupied by a horse farm, greenhouses and Jones Farm rented fields. Jones Farm, along with The Chelmsford Open Space Stewardship Program has been working closely with the Town on the future development of this wonderful open space. Now in its second year, gardeners are getting their plots ready and are planting this years early season crops. Remembering that we still may have a frost, gardeners should be careful to plant only those vegetables listed on the right side of this page at the moment.

The Chelmsford Openspace Stewardship Program operates all of Chelmsford's open spaces including the new Community Garden on Robin Hill Rd. The Chelmsford Open Space Stewardship is an independent group of volunteers working with the Chelmsford Conservation Commission. It was established in November 2005 by residents who enjoy hiking, being productive and doing things outdoors. While the Conservation Commission manages and protects open space property in the town of Chelmsford, the Stewards maintain and improve the trail systems within these open spaces – anything from picking up trash and keeping the trails free of fallen trees to replacing worn out bridges and kiosks. Stewards provide a daily presence and ongoing maintenance so these special properties can be enjoyed by all.

Anyone interested in getting involved with this wonderful group of volunteers can call Phil Stanway at 978-273-1474. You can also check out their website at www.thechelmsfordian.com

Attention All Gardeners:

The Members of the 2010 Community Garden are reaping the fruits of their labors just about now! They are picking peas, broccoli, zucchini, herbs, beets and more. The growing season is in full swing although we could use a little rain! Thanks to Phil Stanway for making sure the water tanks keep getting filled!

The Walter F. Lewis Accessible Garden is also up and growing beautifully!
